CEC registers group of voters in support of Mikhail Prokhorov

The CEC also registered his authorized representatives and permitted to open a special election account

MOSCOW, December 18 (Itar-Tass) — The Russian Central Election Commission registered on Sunday a group of voters, formed to support self-nomination by businessman Mikhail Prokhorov as a candidate for the presidency.

The CEC also registered his authorized representatives and permitted to open a special election account. To register officially as a candidate for the presidential post by January 19, Prokhorov is to submit to the CEC at least two million signatures of voters in his support.

Ex-leader of Right Cause billionaire Prokhorov submitted to the CEC documents, confirming his self-nomination late in the evening on December 15. He was nominated as a candidate for the presidential post later in the day at a meeting of an initiative group, consisting of around 700 people. The meeting was attended by quite a number of prominent people who supported Prokhorov also at the time he headed Right Cause. Itar-Tass learnt that “they included Alla Pugacheva, Andrei Makarevich, Leonid Yermolnik, Konstantin Khabensky, Viktor Yerofeyev, Alexander Lyubimov and others”.

Earlier, Prokhorov, deposed in the autumn from the post of the head of Right Cause, said that the minimum programme of his presidential campaign is formation of a new liberal party. “When I take any decision, I’m always guided by the maximum result,” he said, having in mind his application for the top state post. “A minimum task is to unite people, to form grounds, preaching humanistic, liberal, rightist, as they say, values and to form a powerful party,” he said.

“I believe that these values will be a dominating trend in the following decade. It is necessary to use any opportunity to speed up this process.”

As for the election fund, Prokhorov intends to invite also those to form it who sponsored the Right Cause Party when he was its chairman. Prokhorov noted that under the law the election fund cannot top 400 million roubles. “Under the law I can transfer only 40 millions of my own assets.

“I shall undoubtedly do this, but I have quite a number of sympathizers who had collected over 800 million roubles in the past when I was the Right Cause leader. Therefore, I hope to invite them,” he said.
