S Ossetia’s former presidential candidate calls on Russia to intervene

TSKHINVAL, December 14 (Itar-Tass) – South Ossetia’s chief opposition leader, former candidate for presidency Alla Dzhioyeva has issued an appeal to the Russian government to intervene in the situation that has taken shape in the young South Caucasian country in the wake of the national parliament’s failure to abide by the key provision of a political agreement, of which the Kremlin is a guarantor.

“Thus the agreement, of which the Russian side is a guarantor, has defaulted due to the actions taken by the South Ossetian parliament,” Dzhioyeva said in a statement circulated Wednesday. “Infringement on the term of the agreement may explode the situation here and lead up to unpredictable consequences.”

“As follows from the agreements, Prosecutor General Taimuraz Khugayev and Supreme Court chairman Atsamaz Bichenov, who have completely discredited themselves in the eyes of the people, should have resigned,” the statement said. “However, the parliament didn’t relieve them of their posts in violation of Clause 2.2, one of the key clauses of the document.”

In her public appeal, Dzhioyeva urged her political supporters to exercise restraint in spite of the decision taken by the members of parliament.

“The Unity party of former President Eduard Kokoity, which has seventeen MPs, isn’t seeking ways out of the crisis but is trying to retain power in its hands,” Sarmat Dzhussoyev, the former chief of Dzhioyeva’s electoral staff told Itar-Tass.

Wednesday, the national parliament of the did not endorse Eduard Kokoity’s petition for dismissing Prosecutor General Taimuraz Khugayev and Supreme Court chairman Atsamaz Bichenov.

Their resignation was a provision of the compromise agreement signed by Kokoity and Dzhioyeva.

Earlier, Kokoity dismissed Deputy Prosecutor General Eldar Kokoyev. He also tendered resignation himself and acknowledged Dzhioyeva’s right to take part in the runoff presidential election.

Dhioyeva responded by recognizing the parliament’s decision to appoint the runoff for March 25, 2012 and took measures towards making her supporters stop street actions.
