VLADIVOSTOK, December 13 (Itar-Tass) — Firefighters have managed to suppress the fire on a bridge across the Zolotoy Rog (Golden Horn) bay, a source at the main department of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations told Itar-Tass.
The bay is seven kilometers long, with a width of about two kilometers and a depth ranging from 20 to 27 meters. The Russian of Vladivostok lies on the hills at the head of the bay.
No casualties or any serious damage to the bridge’s main constructions have been reported. A fire-alarm signal was received late on Monday. Fire crews arrived ten minutes later. The fire covered an area of up to 500 square meters. Thirty-eight equipment units and 167 people were mobilized to fight the fire. The fire had been localized by the middle of the night.
The main task was to prevent fire from spreading under the bridge where a five-storied apartment building and privately-owned houses are located.
The bridge across the Zolotoy Rog bay is a facility that will appear in Vladivostok by the APEC summit in 2012. The bridge will become part of a new transportation system of the regional center of the Primorye region and will connect the central part of Vladivostok to the Pervomaiskiy district on the Churkin peninsula.
The bridge’s construction is entering the final stage. The opening ceremony was planned for the summer of 2012. It’s still unknown whether the builders are going to resume their work and will the fire delay the facility’s opening.
