Observers see no reasons for annulling the results of the December 11 presidential elections in Transdniestria

TIRASPOL, December 12 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian and CIS observers see no reasons for annulling the results of the December 11 presidential elections in Transdniestria as its leader Igor Smirnov insists, observers from the Federation of Peace and Accord said on Monday, December 12.

“There are no reasons to conclude that the distortions are such that they make the elections invalid,” Vilyam Smirnov of the Coordination Council for the Protection of People’s Election Rights said.

Smirnov requested that the results of the December 11 presidential election in the region be annulled.

He filed his appeal to the Central Election Commission on Monday, December 12.

Earlier, the Central Election Commission postponed the announcement of the results of the election for two days due to “numerous complaints from candidates and voters”, commission spokesman Dmitry Matveyev said.

According to preliminary information, Kaminsky and former Parliament Speaker Yevgeny Shevchuk will compete in the runoff election, leaving Smirnov overboard.

Transdniestrian Parliament Speaker and presidential candidate Anatoly Kaminsky said he would not like the South Ossetian scenario to occur in Transdniestria after the presidential election in this self-proclaimed region.

“God forbid that we see a repetition of the South Ossetian scenario here. At least I will not lead people to build barricades no matter what happened. I am ready to shake the winner’s hand. If there is a runoff, I will run. If there is a court ruling, I will comply,” Kaminsky said.

Shevchuk has voiced concern over a delay in the announcement of the results of the elections as well. He said that only the Transdniestrian Supreme Court has the authority to annul the results.
