Kaliningrad regiment to be equipped with S-400 air defense systems

At present, a tactical exercise with live shooting is underway at the Kapustin Yar firing range in the Astrakhan region

MOSCOW, December 7 (Itar-Tass) — One of the surface-to-air missile regiments in Russia's westernmost Kaliningrad region will be equipped with new S-400 air defense systems "Triumph," spokesman for the Western Military District Col Andrei Bobrun told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

"At present, a tactical exercise with live shooting is underway at the Kapustin Yar firing range in the Astrakhan region. Taking part in it are air defense units from the Western Military District, which are being equipped with the new S-400 air defense system "Triumph."

"After the drill, the new equipment will be added to the arsenal of the troops in our district. In the future, S-400 systems will go on combat duty in the Kaliningrad region to ensure reliable protection of the air borders in the west of Russia," the spokesman said.

A new generation S-400 air defense system /Triumph/ is intended for destroying airborne jamming stations, radar and command post planes, reconnaissance planes, strategic and tactical aviation aircraft, operative-tactical ballistic missiles, medium range ballistic missiles, supersonic targets and other modern and advanced means of delivering air strikes.

The system has significantly improved its performance characteristics by range and effectiveness and the number of targets it can engage compared with the S-300 model.
