MOSCOW, December 7 (Itar-Tass) —— The Russian General Staff intends to bring the number of contract servicemen to 425,000 people and to draft in the army more university graduates, Chief of the Russian General Staff Gen. Nikolai Makarov said at a meeting with military attaches of foreign countries accredited in Moscow on Wednesday.
In reply to a question how the Defence Ministry and the General Staff will take into account demographic problems in the staffing of the Russian Armed Forces, Makarov said, “We are planning to go along two paths.” The first path is the conscription recruitment of those who had deferments over the education. “Usually citizens get higher education by 24-25 years in our country. We are planning to recruit this category of citizens upon graduation,” Makarov pointed out.
As for the second path “we intend to recruit 425,000 servicemen on the contract basis and to solve this problem this way,” he elaborated.
