PARIS, December 2 (Itar-Tass) —— The construction of the first Mistral helicopter ship for the Russian Navy has begun in France, a source at the French company DCNS told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“Russia made an advance payment several weeks ago, and the construction works are about to start,” he said. “The first Mistral ship will be supplied to the Russian Navy in 2014 and the second in 2015.”

The construction of the second ship will begin in several months, the source said.

The sides signed the $1.2 billion contract in June 2011. Russia will build the third and fourth Mistral ships on its territory.

A Mistral ship with the displacement of 21,000 tonnes and the length of 210 meters is capable of taking aboard up to 16 heavy helicopters, up to 900 servicemen and 70 pieces of armor.
