YEKATERINBURG, December 2 (Itar-Tass) —— The driver of Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Alexander Misharin was airlifted by helicopter in an extremely severe condition from Krasnouralsk to Yekaterinburg , the press service of the regional Health Ministry told Itar-Tass on Friday.

The doctors still estimate that Misharin, who was injured in a major road accident, is in grave, but stable condition.

“The governor was in a medicine-induced slumber and connected to the heart-and-lung machine. After Misharin regained consciousness he talked to his wife and other relatives. The doctors will meet for the medical board soon to consider the involvement of medical specialists from Moscow and the possibility for a next surgery,” chief anaesthesiologist and Misharin’s practitioner Alexander Levit said.

The road accident, in which the governor and his driver were injured, occurred at about 8.30 p.m. local time (6.30 p.m. Moscow time) on December 1. Volga, Skoda and Mercedes collided on the Yekaterinburg-Serov highway near the town of Krasnouralsk. The Volga driver died instantaneously and is being identified. The Mercedes and the governor were injured and hospitalized.

According to the preliminary theory, Misharin’s car was moving on the correct lane at the moment of the road accident. “The car skidded on the middle of the road in the collision,” chief of the Sverdlovsk regional branch of the Investigative Committee Valery Zadorin said. More detailed reports will be made public, when the doctors permit the investigators to interrogate the governor and his driver, he concluded.
