Sverdlovsk governor undergoes surgery, stays in grave condition

Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Alexander Misharin was injured in a road accident on Thursday evening

YEKATERINBURG, December 2 (Itar-Tass) —— Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Alexander Misharin, who was injured in a road accident on Thursday evening, underwent a surgery. Misharin remains in grave condition, deputy chief of the governor’s staff Ilya Ananyev told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“The governor is being kept at the intensive therapy ward after the surgery. He got major wounds in the road accident,” Ananyev said.

The road accident, which injured the governor and killed one more man, occurred at about 8.30 p.m. local time (6.30 p.m. Moscow time) on December 1. Volga, Skoda and Mercedes collided on the Yekaterinburg-Serov highway near the town of Krasnouralsk. The Volga driver died instantaneously and is being identified. The Mercedes driver and Misharin got injuries, particularly the governor broke his leg. They were hospitalized.

According to the preliminary theory, Misharin’s car was driving on the correct lane at the moment of the road accident. “The car was skidded on the middle of the road as a result of collision,” chief of the Sverdlovsk regional branch of the Investigative Committee Valery Zadorin said. The details of the road accident will be made public, after the doctors permit to speak with the governor and his driver, he concluded.
