Medvedev says party is to keep abreast of times to enjoy popular support

“The party may count on popular support only when it is capable of changing,” he said at a meeting with the party supporters

MOSCOW, December 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who tops the election list of the ruling United Russia party in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, said on Thursday the party should be flexible enough to keep abreast of the times and thus enjoy popular support.

“The party may count on popular support only when it is capable of changing,” he said at a meeting with the party supporters. “The party should keep abreast of the time.”

According to the Russian president, serious political associations sink into political oblivion when they no longer are in keeping with the time and people tend to ignore them. “The party must take such decisions that would promote its popularity,” Medvedev said.

“If due to these or those reasons, party leaders may not be able to do what they must or if they fail to achieve their goals, they just leave, and it is normal and we should get used to it and learn to recognize both our victories and defeats,” he said. “Only this way, the part may win popular sympathy and support.”
