Russia, Ukraine to hold joint naval exercise in May

There are plans for using 16 ships and boats and four aircraft

KIEV, November 26 (Itar-Tass) —— Ukraine’s Navy and Russia’s Black Sea Fleet next year will hold a joint exercise to practice a humanitarian operation, the press-service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

The defense ministries and delegations from the Ukrainian Navy and the Black Sea Fleet have launched preparations for the exercise in Sevastopol to determine the scenario, dates and resources required.

The command staff exercise, codenamed Clearway of Peace-2012, is scheduled for the second half of May 2012. A humanitarian operation will be practiced for the first time ever since the exercise began to be held in 1997. There are plans for using 16 ships and boats and four aircraft.

In accordance with the rotation principle next year’s exercise is to be run by a representative of Ukraine’s naval command. A Russian Black Sea Fleet officer will be his deputy.
