MOSCOW, November 25 (Itar-Tass) —— The Federation Council upper house of Russian parliament will set the date of the nationwide presidential election which is likely to be March 4, 2012.

Alexei Alexandrov, head of the constitutional legislation committee, told Tass that according to the law on the presidential election the date shall be the second Sunday of the month when the previous election was held.

In 2008 the election was held in March and “formally the date has to be March 11,” Alexandrov said, but explained that next year March 11 will be a working day because of March 8 holidays which will be celebrated for three days running including Friday. The Russians will have to work on Sunday instead of Friday.

“Thus, the election is to be held on March 4,” the senator said.

The decision will come into force after official publication which is expected next day, on November 26.
