Russia, Italy exchange culture center, Caravaggio in cross-year

In Moscow the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum will open on Friday an unprecedented display of eleven works by Michelangelo da Caravaggio

ROME/MOSCOW, November 25 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia opened its Science and Culture Center in Rome on Thursday while Italy sent an unprecedented collection of Caravaggio’s masterpieces to Moscow in the framework of the Russia-Italy cross-year.

In Rome the Russian agency for international and humanitarian cooperation officially launched the center which is to hold exhibitions, conferences, cinema shows, and concerts. “In one word, it will be the center of Russian culture in Rome,” agency head Farit Mukhametshin said.

Agency representative in Italy Oleg Osipov said Russia also eyes other Italian cities. “In future we plan to expand activities to other areas with big communities of our compatriots. We eye Milan, Venice, Florence, and Naples,” he said.

“It is an unprecedented project as such a collection has never been displayed outside Italy,” museum Director Irina Antonova told Tass.

She said Russian museums have only one work by Caravaggio and “this time we succeeded to agree and bring eleven masterpieces.”

They include Boy with a Basket of Fruit from Borghese in Rome, Supper at Emmaus from Brera Art Gallery in Milan, the Entombment from Vatican, and the Conversion of St. Paul from Santa Maria del Popolo Church in Rome.
