MOSCOW, November 25 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow Mayor and ruling United Russia Party member Sergei Sobyanin said on Thursday he would resign if he loses trust of Muscovites.

Elections of regional governors were cancelled in Russia and they are now elected by regional legislatures upon nomination by the Russian president.

However Sobyanin told the Echo Moskvy radio that he is monitoring various opinion polls in the capital city.

“We are dealing with sociology and public opinion polls and we know the public opinion without election. If a majority of Muscovites do not trust me I will resign the next day,” he said.

Speaking about the major problem of the capital city, which is huge traffic jams, the mayor said various experts believe it is impossible to resolve it.

“I could take no risks and promise nothing and I could say the problem is irresolvable in Moscow. But I took on responsibility to promise that in two-three years the situation will begin to improve,” he said and explained the city will not come to a standstill.

“I cannot say there will be no traffic jams at all, but it would be possible to drive and move in the city,” he added.
