Medvedev suggests gas should be used in North Russia for fuel

Medvedev said this would be a very costly program, so it should be implemented gradually, reducing the consumption of fuel oil

PETROZAVODSK, November 24 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Dmitry Medvedev holds that gas rather than fuel oil should be used in the northern areas of the country as fuel and that livestock breeding and potato growing should be developed there.

Regarding northern districts’ dependence on fuel oil supply, the president said it is much more economically expedient to invest into alternative sources - into gas. He was speaking at the meeting with representatives of the mass media of the North Western Federal District. Medvedev said this would be a very costly program, so it should be implemented gradually, reducing the consumption of fuel oil. The president said the program should be the task not only for the federal authorities but also for local ones.
