CHERKESSK, November 24 (Itar-Tass) — Two gunmen who offered armed resistance during detention were destroyed in Karachai-Cherkessia, the regional department of the Investigative Committee (SK) told Itar-Tass.
"The shootout occurred at around 18:50, Moscow time, on Wednesday. "In the course of an operation, law-enforcement agent blocked local residents in an apartment house in Shevtsova Street. They were identified as Ruslan Bairamkulov, 29, and Kanamat Saryyev, 30. The men offered armed resistance and shot at police with an assault rifle," senior aide to the SK department Sergei Shuvayev said.
Police returned fire, killing Saryyev on the spot and seriously wounding Bairamkulov. He was rushed to hospital. Two policemen and one officer of the regional department of the federal Security Service were slightly injured.
Detectives retrieved from the scene a Kalashnikov rifle. Police said the weapon had been stolen during an armed attack on a road police post in the village of Mirny on September 1.
The special operation continues in Karachai-Cherkessia. Criminal proceedings were opened over attempted murder of law-enforcement personnel.
According to preliminary information, Saryyev and Bairamkulov were members of the gang led by Islam Uzdenov, which attacked police in the villages of Mirny and Uchkeken, Malokarachayevsky district, on October 29 and November 19. Two police officers were killed in the attacks, and another two were seriously wounded.
