VLADIVOSTOK, November 20 (Itar-Tass) — Lighthouse tenders, constantly working on virtually uninhabited Urup Island, participated on Sunday in the ahead-of-time voting of the Russian general elections.
A helicopter that brought ballot papers, was “the polling station” for them. According to information of secretary of the election commission of the Sakhalin Region Lyudmila Lukyanova, the turnout on the island was 100 percent: all six people, servicing the lighthouse, cast their ballot papers.
The ahead-of-time voting was also held in some outlying places of the Okhinsky district, Sakhalin Island. Election commission members came to them by car. All in all, 100 people voted ahead of time at the State Duma elections in the Sakhalin Region as of this Sunday.
People who will not be able to reach polling stations due to some reasons on Election Day, December 4, will participate in the ahead-of-time voting at the general elections in the country. These are reindeer herdsmen, roaming the tundra, lighthouse tenders, workers at Arctic stations and other specialists, working far from villages and towns.
Therefore, members of election commissions come to them, using various types of transport, including helicopters, snow tractors and reindeer sledges.
