Medvedev vows to fight attempts to spread ethnic strife in Russia

President recalled that “big political events are nearing in the country” and “this is an element of democracy”

UFA, November 19 (Itar-Tass) —— President Dmitry Medvedev vowed to take strong measures against attempts to incite ethnic strife in Russia.

“All attempts to incite ethnic or religious strife must meet an adequate and very strong reaction, no matter where they occur, be it the central part of the country, the Caucasus or the Far East,” Medvedev said at a meeting with Muslim clerics in Ufa on Saturday, November 19.

He stressed that “there must be no regions exempted from the relevant requirements of Russian legislation in this respect”.

Medvedev recalled that “big political events are nearing in the country” and “this is an element of democracy”.

“But we must not forget the main point: we are a multiethnic and multi-confessional state, but we should all feel like citizens of one state. We cannot do it as it was done in Soviet times. But it is very important to keep the experience of co-existence that was built for thousands of years,” the president said.
