Government to provide conditions for retirees to continue working

“Retirees are a colossal resource; they are ready to be doing something at home,” Medvedev said

MOSCOW, November 17 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia’s government should provide conditions to provide retirees with an opportunity to continue working even when they are of pension age, President Dmitry Medvedev told a meeting with retirees, which also featured Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

“Every person should decide for himself or herself /whether to work or not when of pension age/,” he said. The work may be social, patriotic or any other, he added.

“The government should provide better conditions, so that a person of advanced age is demanded,” Medvedev said. “/Unlike many other countries/ we have been paying, pay and will pay pensions, but the government should assist retirees, should realize what they want.”

Medvedev suggested an option of a work at home, for example on a personal computer.

“A person used to work, may be doing the same work at home,” he said. “Retirees are a colossal resource; they are ready to be doing something at home.”

Medvedev stressed that sometimes employers are not behaving decently.

“The authorities should react to this,” he said. “Retirees require protection from the government,” and cases of violation of their rights “should be overseen by prosecutors.”

“Employers, too, should have stimuli to hire retirees,” Medvedev continued.

Vladimir Putin agreed with the approach.

“I believe we should consider a flexible system, including making employers interested,” he said.
