Plane spots ship lost in White Sea

No information about the ship's crew and passengers was immediately available

ARKHANGELSK, November 16 (Itar-Tass) — The Captain Kuznetsov ship reported missing in the White Sea has been found laying aground in shallow waters, a source from the Emergencies situations department of the Arkhangelsk region told Itar-Tass. A plane spotted the lost ship aground last night, it said.

The Dixon icebreaker at the nearest distance from the ship in distress, can reach the Captain Kuznetsov at around 2. 00 pm. Captain of the Dixon icebreaker reported that the lost ship was found in the area with the coordinates of 67.14 degrees North and 42.58 East. Presumably, the sea where the Captain Kuznetsov ran aground is no more than two meters deep, a source from the operational headquarters created to coordinate the search operation for the lost ship, told Itar-Tass.

The ship was found in the assigned search area. The ship is adrift, the Russian Transport Ministry said. No information about the ship's crew and passengers was immediately available, it said.

The Captain Kuznetsov freight ship lost in Russia’s northern White Sea was heading for the port of Arkhangelsk to stay there for the winter. There were eleven crewmen and one passenger on board. The ship lost on Tuesday night was caught in a heavy sea storm in the narrow entrance to the White Sea. The last radio contact with the ship was at 02:00 a.m. Tuesday. The Captain Kuznetsov, with the home port in St. Petersburg, is owned by the North-Western River Shipping Company.

The ship built in 1984 is 86.7 meters long, 12 meters wide and has a freight capacity of 1.45 thousand tons.
