HONOLULU, Hawaii, November 14 (Itar-Tass) —— As a host of the next Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC) summit in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok in 2012, Russia wants to demonstrate that it is both European and Asian country, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told journalists.
“The venue for the summit was chosen deliberately: this way we are stressing that Russia has two poles – European and Asian,” Medvedev said.
He also said that the summit plans have two purposes. “First, the summit as such, and here everything is OK. The second task is to make Vladivostok an utterly new city having facilities it lacked,” he noted and added that the expenses on Vladivostok’s development stand at five billion roubles, which by far more that on the summit as such.
“Considerable funds have been allocated to overhaul Vladivostok and we must spend this money as efficiently as possible to improve the living standards dramatically,” the Russian president stressed. “Vladivostok will get a university, new motor roads, communications networks, and infrastructure that will serve for decades.”
