DUSHANBE, November 13 (Itar-Tass) —— The last of 25 escapees from the Tajik National Security Committee’s detention center in Dushanbe has been caught, Interior Ministry spokesman Makhmadullo Asaddudoyev told Itar-Tass on Sunday. The convicts broke free early in the morning of August 22, 2010.

Azamsho Ziyeyev aka Hijab who was sentenced to 28 years in a maximum-security penitentiary was caught in the Pyandzh region on the Tajik border.

“The detention was so swift that the fugitive had no time to open fire. He was carrying a pistol and a hand grenade,” the officer said. “The manhunt lasted for more than a year. Eight convicts were killed in gunfire exchanges, 13 were taken into custody, and four convicts – citizens of Afghanistan were detained by Afghan border guards and sent to the Kabul prison.”

There were four natives of the North Caucasus amongst the runaways. They were members of illegal armed units operating in eastern Tajikistan.
