KHABAROVSK, November 11 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated that a stronger defence capability and security on the Kuriles is not targeted against third countries, including Japan.
“The Kurile Islands is our territory and it is obvious no matter how strange this seems to some of our neighbours,” the president said. Medvedev noted that as for the defence capability and security (in the region) there are no actions “targeted against third countries, including Japan.” “This is just our land and military forces should be deployed there, because this is the border, but they should be reasonable and sufficient, no one should take it as militaristic actions,” he said.
Medvedev invited again Japanese colleagues to make investments in the Kuriles. “But the Japanese say to us that at first the problem of territories should be solved and then we will make investments. This will not go so,” the president stated. “We are ready for the joint work on the islands, are ready to give an opportunity for investments, protect Japanese investments and are ready to do it right now,” the president pledged.
