MINSK, November 11 (Itar-Tass) — President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has given time until May 2012 to his government for a quality improvement of people’s living standards.

“By May 1, 2012 the people‘s opinion about the government and the general moods should change radically,” he said Thursday as he addressed a meeting on the problems of state property management. “This is our time limit and please tell all your subordinates about it.”

He also addressed Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich telling him “it’s no use hoping for any monies from above, including in the industrial sector.”

“Everything must twirl there,” Lukashenko said. “For the time being, I’m putting up with it till January 1 and then you’ll have a reserve of time till May 1 – well, maybe May 9, the VE-Day.”

“The population should acquire a different look at the government policies,” he said. “We’re doing everything for the benefit of the rank-and-file, not for the benefit of market economy tricks of some kind.”

“Keep your money in your hand and act, as the time requires,” Lukashenko said. “And instead of this you keep pinning hopes on the market.

“In the meantime, Europe and the U.S. wouldn’t have such huge problems today if the market were so highly efficient in reality,” he said.

“The government’s market-oriented position has brought about a situation where the price of gasoline has trebled,” Lukashenko said. “It’s like looking at the U.S. dollar’s exchange rate as if nothing else really matters.”

“No one really takes the trouble of thinking how we managed going on for fifteen years,” he said delivering sharp criticism at the government for what he finds to be an excessive fascination with the precepts of market economy.
