The mufti of Russia’s republic of Mordovia has been killed in a traffic accident

SARANSK, November 10 (Itar-Tass) — The mufti of Russia’s republic of Mordovia has been killed in a traffic accident, a source in the republican traffic police told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

According to the source, the accident took place at about 15:20 Moscow time on Wednesday at the 13th kilometer of the Saransk-Ichalki highway. Abdulkarim Abdrashitov, 31, was driving his VAZ-2109 car when it ran into the oncoming lane and rammed a Volga car.

Apart from Abrashitov, the accident killed a Volga passenger, a 55-year-old woman. The Volga driver was hospitalized.

Mufti Abdulkarim Abdrashitov was elected chairman of the spiritual board of Mordovia’s Muslims on September 14. His predecessor, Rashit Khalikov, is now aide to chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia responsible for the Volga region.
