TBILISI, November 10 (Itar-Tass) — NATO will hand over Afghanistan’s authorities responsibility for security in the country by 2014, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Thursday.
The NATO peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan is entering its decisive phase, Rasmussen said at the Georgian base of Vaziani, Tbilisi suburbs.
Addressing Georgian peacekeepers, who were taking part in the operation in Afghanistan, the NATO Secretary General said by 2014 the Alliance was completing the handover of responsibility for security in Afghanistan to the country’s authorities.
In his words, NATO will uphold the Afghan people in order to ensure peace and stability in the country. He stressed that the Alliance would help Afghanistan create a strong and prosperous state and play a worthy role in the international community.
