Lower house of Kazakh parliament asks president to disband house

They ask the president to issue a presidential decree to disband the fourth Majilis and to hold early parliamentary elections

ASTANA, November 10 (Itar-Tass) —— The deputies of Majilis (the lower house) of Kazakh parliament asked Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to disband the lower house and to hold early parliamentary elections, member of the Majilis committee for finances and budget Nurtai Sabilyanov told an urgent press conference on Thursday.

“We ask the president to issue a presidential decree to disband the fourth Majilis and to hold early parliamentary elections,” he said.

Sabilyanov recalled that under the Kazakh Constitution a five-year term of Majilis and Maslihats (local representative bodies of power) will expire in August 2012. “So, next elections in Majilis and Maslihats are to be held in August 2012,” he said.

However, “today the society is discussing actively the need for early parliamentary elections,” the Majilis member said.

“It is noteworthy that the current legislation allows doing it through an address of deputies to the president to disband the parliament,” Sabilyanov said, noting that “the address of deputies was already passed to the presidential administration.” Some 53 from 107 Majilis deputies signed the address to the president.
