Winners of “For Women of Science” contest to be awarded in Moscow

A national scholarship was instituted in 2007 to support young Russian woman scientists in developing their careers in Russia

MOSCOW, November 10 (Itar-Tass) — Ten Russian woman scientists will receive scholarships worth 350,000 roubles on the International Day of Science on Thursday to commend their achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine and biology. All of them are the winners of the annual “For Women of Science” competition held by the Russian Academy of Science and UNESCO.

“The contest’s jury, that comprises prominent Russian scientists and professors, held a meeting on October 17. Almost 400 young woman scientists under 35 years who work at research institutes and institutions of high learning had contended for the prize. The jury selected ten winners from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk,” the organizing committee went on to say.

“The contest gives young woman scientists a good opportunity to realize their ideas and plans, encourage them and inspire them to new research and scientific discoveries. They believe that it’s not just a prize but a unique chance for young scientists to demonstrate their achievements and make acquaintance with fellow-scientists,” the organizing committee said.

A national scholarship was instituted in 2007 to support young Russian woman scientists in developing their careers in Russia. The contest’s organizing committee received about 200 applications from scientists from 40 Russian regions in the year of its foundation. The number of applications increased to 400 last year.
