Timber storehouse ablaze in Arkhangelsk river port

Residential buildings near the port are safe

ARKHANGELSK, November 7 (Itar-Tass) —— A fire that broke out in the river port in Arkhangelsk earlier on Monday has spread all over the timber storehouse of 96,000 cubic m.

Ablaze is an area of about 8,000 sq m, a source at the Russian Emergencies Ministry's Arkhangelsk regional department told Itar-Tass.

The city's main fire fighting forces are working at the site. There are 89 people and 26 engines.

The fire fighting operation is complicated by powerful heat radiation from the large blaze, the impossibility to extinguish the timber fire inside and the strong wind that spreads sparks tens of metres far from the blaze.

Residential buildings near the port are safe.

The blaze is expected to be extinguished by the end of the day.

What caused the fire has yet to be established.
