CAIRO, November 4 (Itar-Tass) —— About 50 tourists from Russia got food poisoned at a hotel in Hurghada, Egypt, a source at the consular department of the Russian embassy in Egypt told Itar-Tass on Friday. The food poisoning cases were reported on October 31 and on November 1 and 2.
All the food-poisoned tourists came to Egypt with Tez Tour and stayed at the Sultan Beach 4 star hotel. The Russians were given medical treatment immediately after their health complaints. Doctors from a local hospital diagnosed the tourists with an acute form of gastroenteritis and provided therapy. “No serious cases were reported, and none of the tourists was taken to hospital,” the diplomat said.
Embassy representatives visited the hotel to assist the tourists, and insurance companies footed their medical bills. Local sanitary services inspected the hotel.
Most of the food-poisoned tourists finished their vacations and returned home. The cause of the poisoning is so far unknown. Test results will be available several days from now.
A tourist told Itar-Tass in Moscow on Friday that the food-poisoned people fainted, ran fever of up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), vomited and had diarrhea. “The hotel doctor diagnosed everyone with overheating and gastritis in order to avoid problems. The lucky ones were taken to the hospital. People suffered from severe dehydration. My mother’s kidneys almost failed,” she said, adding that some of the food-poisoned tourists were children.
