NIZNY-NOVGOROD, November 4 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on National Unity Day laid flowers at the monument to Minin and Pozharsky in Nizhny Novgorod.
The monument is situated on National Unity Square. In 1611, here, near the St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Kuzma Minin, a district head, called on fellow citizens for rising up to liberate their land from the invaders.
The name for the square was chosen after a vote on the official website of the city administration with the participation of many citizens.
The cathedral and the square were restored by November 4, 2005. The monument created by Zurab Tsereteli was unveiled by the day. It is a copy of the well-known Moscow monument by sculptor Ivan Martos.
