Former poultry farm burnt down in Moscow region

An enormous building on more than 40,000 square meters burnt down to ashes and collapsed partially

MOSCOW, November 3 (Itar-Tass) —— The fire broke out a week ago at the former poultry farm, which burnt down in the Moscow regional town of Tomilino on Wednesday, the chief of the Moscow regional emergency situation service Yevgeny Sekirin told reporters on Thursday.

“The fire broke out at a warehouse a week ago, but the fire area was much smaller than yesterday,” he said, rejecting some media reports that the former poultry farm had been burning for several days. The residents of nearby houses could just feel the smoke smell after the first fire, but no open fire was registered, he said.

The chief of the Moscow regional emergency service recalled that the fire spread on 40,000 square meters on Wednesday. “The firefighting forces were enough. The firemen were seeking to localize the fire and to prevent it from spreading,” Sekirin said. “We coped with this task,” he added.

The fire broke out at the former poultry farm in the Moscow regional town of Tomilino on Wednesday evening. An enormous building on over 40,000 square meters burnt down and collapsed partially. The spare parts and the motor fuel were being kept in the burnt building.

The firemen believe that a late fire alarm call could have triggered a rapid fire. “The fire alarm call came at 5.35 p.m. Moscow time on Wednesday in the Lyubertsy garrison of the fire service. The first fire engine arrived at the fire site five minutes after the call, when the open fire spread on 500 square metes and kept growing,” the regional emergency chief told Itar-Tass.

The detectives from the fire watchdog are working at the fire site.

In the Soviet times the Tomilino poultry farm, which was established in 1929, was the largest one in the Moscow Region. But the poultry farm premises were rented in the last few years.
