Russia, Ukraine agree to ruble payments for Russian gas

It says an official report of the Ukrainian National Bank posted on Tuesday

MOSCOW, November 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Ukrainian National Bank Chairman Sergei Arbuzov, Russian Acting Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and executives of the Bank of Russia and Gazprom have agreed to the possibility of ruble payments for Russian gas, says an official report of the Ukrainian National Bank posted on Tuesday.
The agreement was reached on October 26.
“This agreement gives Ukraine a space for maneuver in paying for imported commodities, among them natural gas, and helps avoid effect of currency market fluctuations in the case of settlements with constituents of the Russian Federation,” the report said.
“The Ukrainian National Bank will continue the policy of diversification in the settlements with main trade partners of Ukraine, both EU member countries, Russia, China and others,” the report said.
Ukraine-Russia gas talks have entered the final stage, and a new gas war is ruled out, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration Sergei Levochkin told reporters earlier in the day.
“Extremely complicated gas negotiations continue. They must bring positive results for Ukraine, i.e. the reduction of gas prices. There is will be no gas war. That is guaranteed 100%,” Levochkin said.
He hopes that the negotiations will be completed soon.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in October that he did not rule out new gas accords with Ukraine. He also said that the new agreements would be beneficial for both countries.
The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada registered on October 31 a bill, which offered Neftegaz Ukraine to open an account for settlements with Gazprom.
