ABU DHABI (UAE), November 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow welcomes the initiative of the League of Arab States (LAS) to hold a meeting of the Syrian authorities and opposition in Cairo, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after the first session of the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council Strategic Dialog
. “Hopefully, the Syrian authorities will accept the offer,” he said. “We call for the dialog between the authorities and the opposition. Our stand is reflected by the draft resolution Russia and China have presented to the UN Security Council,” he said. The draft document “envisages peaceful settlement of the internal political crisis without any external interference. All the Syrian sides must take part in the national dialog,” the minister said.
The Russian position is invariable, Lavrov affirmed. “It is based on the UN Security Council resolution. The document urges the government and the opposition to start negotiations for settling the crisis,” he said.
