ABU DHABI, November 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia will prevent a recurrence of the Libyan scenario in Syria, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday. “We do not support regimes; we support international law,” the minister said in comment on the Russian position on Syria. “There is no doubt we have plenty of questions about the observance of international law since the UN Security Council’s resolution on Libya entered into force.” “After the Libyan tragedy, which claimed thousands of lives under the motto of the protection of civilian population, we are seriously concerned about claims suggesting it could be a model for the future,” he said. “We will not allow that to happen again if we can,” Lavrov said. “We do not protect any regimes. We did not protect the Qadhafi regime either. We supported the initiative of the African Union, which, unfortunately, was ignored by certain NATO member states,” he said. “Now we support the approaches [the international community] has in the Yemeni situation,” Lavrov concluded.
