ABU DHABI, November 1 (Itar-Tass) — Russia hopes that the United States will reconsider its decision to stop the financing of UNESCO that approved Palestine’s application for membership, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a news conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. “We believe that Palestine’s membership of UNESCO was quite a legal demand,” he said. “The voting was legal.” “There is no doubt that Palestine’s membership of UNESCO or the United Nations is not taken by the Palestinian authorities as an alternative to the talks [with Israel],” Lavrov said. “It’s a pity that the United States has taken such a decision,” the diplomat said. “This is not the step that would help to maintain an atmosphere necessary for the resumption of the talks [between Palestine and Israel].” “We hope that the U.S. decision will be reconsidered,” he said.
