The runoff is not needed in the presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan, the chairman of the Kyrgyz Central Elections Commission (CEC) Tuigunaly Abdraimov said here on Monday. The final election results will be made public after the original protocols are received from all territorial election committees.
“I believe that we will need less than 20 days envisaged in the law in order to process and check them,” the CEC chief said. He acknowledged that several attempts at rigging the election results were exposed. “These violations were fixed and the election results at these polling stations will most likely be annulled,” Abdraimov said.
More than 95% of votes have been counted so far. Atambayev gained 62.8% of votes.
The leader of the United Kyrgyzstan Party Adakhan Madumarov is the runner-up with 14.9% and the leader of the Ata-Zhurt (Fatherland) Party is ranked third with 14.4%.
“Atambayev gained the number of votes needed for the victory in the first round,” Abdraimov said. Some 16 candidates were running for presidency. “Atambayev gained more than 50% of the total number of voters, who participated in the voting and it can be said that he already won in the first round,” Abdraimov underlined.
