ARKHANGELSK, October 27 (Itar-Tass) — The Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk will lay down a modern naval transport ship for the Russian Navy, the shipyard press service told Itar-Tass on Thursday. The contract to build the naval transport ship was signed with the Defence Ministry in September.

Zvezdochka received a good contract to build a big modern warship 112 meters long and with a water displacement of about 6,000 tonnes, director general of the shipyard Vladimir Nikitin said. The shipyard chief noted that it was initially planned to sign a contract right for two similar warships, but finally the contract for one naval transport ship was signed. “The second naval transport ship will be also compulsorily built, but later after 2014,” he noted. The St. Petersburg-based Almaz design bureau has developed the naval weapons carrier project. “This develops the concept of a naval rescue tugboat Zvezdochka (the Severodvinsk shipyard built it and passed to the Navy in the previous year – Itar-Tass),” the general director added.

This year the sum of the state defence order for Zvezdochka went up 50% against the previous year, the shipyard press service reported.

Zvezdochka is the leading Russian shipyard to repair and modernize nuclear submarines. The shipyard also launched the construction of surface vessels, including fishing trawlers and offshore drilling platforms. The shipyard employs about 14,000 people. The shipyard has two covered slipways for seven berths intended for the repair and construction of vessels with a weight up to 18,000 tonnes.
