UNITED NATIONS, October 25 (Itar-Tass) — The United Nations Security Council may still have a say concerning the situation in Syria, as it did on the situation in Yemen, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told a session of the United Nations Security Council dedicated to problems of the Middle East.
The Russian ambassador reminded that the Russian-Chinese draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council on Syria, which is oriented towards settlement rather than stirring up the conflict, is still at the disposal of the Security Council members. “Obviously, the strategy of certain members of the international community towards Syria, the strategy of threats, pressure and sanction that only aggravate the situation in the country has failed,” he said.
In contract to such a strategy, he praised the position of the Arab world. “The latest initiatives and steps of the League of Arab States on Syria are reassuring,” he noted.
Two weeks ago, Russia and Chine blocked the Western draft of a United Nations Security Council resolution that threatened to impose sanction against the Syrian authorities for suppressing opposition rallies.
