IRKUTSK, October 25 (Itar-Tass) — The first 17 people who were affected by salmonella infection have been discharged from hospitals of Bratsk and the Bratsk district. The remaining patients are still undergoing treatment, the Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service (Rospotrebnadzor) department for the Irkutsk region told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

A total of 40 people were hospitalised with this diagnosis in the period from October 11 to 16 – they are 24 employees of the Vozrozdeniye company who are building an underwater crossing of the Eastern Siberia - Pacific Ocean (ESPO) oil pipeline in the Ust-Ilim reservoir 40 kilometres from Bratsk, the others – residents of the city, including two children. The mass infection was caused by a local pastry shop products that they ate.

The Padunsky district court issued a ruling to suspend the pastry shop’s operation for up to 90 days. A criminal case has been opened under the RF Criminal Code article “production, storage, transportation or marketing of goods and products, provision of services that do not meet safety requirements.” The food poisoning victims can also apply to court with an appeal for compensation for moral damage and damage caused to their health, the regional Rospotrebnadzor department noted.
