Japan fishermen catch 5,000 t of salmon

Russian fishermen caught in the Far East seas in 2011 about 200,000 tonnes of salmon, according to border guards

VLADIVOSTOK, October 24 (Itar-Tass) — During the salmon fishing season of 2011 Japanese fishermen caught 5,088 tonnes of Siberian salmon and humpback salmon, with the permitted quota of 5,556 tonnes, in the exclusive economic zone of Russia.

A total of 18 small and 9 medium-tonnage Japanese ships were engaged in salmon catches. They have not exceeded the quotas, and no violations of Russian environmental law by Japanese fishermen have been identified, the public relations group of the Sakhalin Coast Guard department of the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Monday commenting on the results of the fishing season.

Officers of the State Marine Inspection conducted over 1,600 inspections on the fishing grounds and at places of unloading the catch. It exposed more than 680 violations committed by Russian fishermen, which two times exceeds last year’s level. About 34,000 metres of fishing nets have been confiscated (12,200 m in 2010). The border guard officers imposed administrative fines worth more than 830 thousand roubles when controlling the coastal fishing.
