MOSCOW, October 21 (Itar-Tass) —— The State Duma decided on Friday not to adopt a special resolution on the death of Muammar Gaddafi, despite the demands of three opposition factions.
While discussing the working schedule of the Duma on Friday morning, Boris Kashin from the Communist faction suggested “the putting on the agenda of the discussion of a resolution of the lower chamber, which should express condolences to the Libyan nation.”
Following Kashin, Vera Lekareva from the Just Russia faction said that “all the TV news programmes and mass media of Russia report with much detail the episode resembling the Medieval Ages – the murder of Gaddafi with the connivance of NATO. NATO was strong enough to overthrow Gaddafi, but for some reason it did not have enough strength for protecting him and bringing him to trial, even if he was a criminal,” she said. “This is why I suggest that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov should be urgently summoned to the Duma to make a report on how our diplomats respond to this situation and whether or not they will express their disapproval. This is not the first time NATO is demonstrating its strength to us, while Duma keeps silent. The Russian leaders criticised that policy on more than one occasion.”
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, said, in his turn, that “now the third faction also finds it necessary to adopt a resolution on the problem.” “This is outright barbarity, when the crowd kills the leader of their country in such a gangster-like way. They received from him more than any other country in the world. No people nowhere in the world received what the Libyans received during 40 years of Gaddafi’s rule,” he said.
“It is true that he held the top post in the country for too many years, but he realised that if he retired, his retirement would bring about the same situation as today. Gaddafi wanted to stop a civil war. One should realise that Libya is an African country, that it is not Europe. The West supported Pinochet, who was a dictator, and gangsters from Kosovo, but it watched with pleasure how the mob was tearing to pieces Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader. This is why we should respond to this situation,” he said. In his opinion, this is a job for the Duma committee for international affairs.
“I think this is a shameful operation staged by NATO, which ended in lynching. It is not becoming to President Barack Obama, Nobel Prize winner, a peace champion, to approve lynching,” said Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the Communist Party. He described the recent developments in Libya as “an episode resembling in the worst possible way the developments of the 30s, which led to fascism and the Second World War.”
Commenting on the proposal of the MPs “to put on the agenda a resolution of the Duma on the situation in Libya and the murder of Gaddafi,” Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov did not give his own opinion and put the issue to the vote. The initiative did not get the majority of votes.
