MOSCOW, October 19 (Itar-Tass) — Almost one third of over 9 million of labour migrants in Russia do not have command of the Russian language, the head of the Federal Migration Service, Konstantin Romodanovsky, said on Wednesday.
“Not a small number of foreign workers arrive in our country without having Russian language skills,” he told a roundtable meeting entitled The Russian language as factor of social adaptation and protection of migrants.
According to the Federal Migration Service, there are some 9.1 million migrants in Russia, of them 29 percent are those who do not know the Russian language.
“These are those who were born after 1986, those who did not study in Soviet schools,” Romodanovsky said.
He expressed confidence that every migrant coming to Russia should obtain basic language skills.
“This increases their social status and allows to get better jobs,” he said.
