ULAN UDE, October 17 (Itar-Tass) — A resident of Russia’s Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) may face up to seven years in prison for hiding two kilograms of natural placer gold. Police found a hiding place with the precious metal worth 3.5 million roubles in a forest near the settlement of Nizhny Bestyakh, a spokesman for the Far Eastern police department of the Russian Interior Ministry told Itar-Tass on Monday.

After receiving information about the hidden gold, police had the 39-year-old man shadowed. “He was detained red-handed when taking the gold out of the hiding place,” the spokesman said.

The gold was placed in a plastic jar, which was wrapped in a cloth and put in a plastic bag. Police also found electronic scales and documents of the might-have-been millionaire.

A criminal case was opened on charges of large-scale illegal possession of precious metals. The charge carries a punishment of up to seven years behind bars.
