ST PETERSBURG, October 16 (Itar-Tass) — Celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the Imperial Lyceum in Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg will start in Russia’s second largest city on Sunday.
The festive ceremony will take place in the Tauride Palace, where soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre and the International Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform.
The Lyceum was opened in Tsarskoye Selo on October 19, 1811. The mission of this prestigious school was to train young men for service to the state. The most famous graduate of the Lyceum was poet Alexander Pushkin, whose poetry immortalized his alma mater.
On October 19, admirers of the Russian poet’s talent will gather in the Lyceum garden for a costumed procession to recite Pushkin’s poems.
