MOSCOW, October 14 (Itar-Tass) —— The Russian National Anti-Terrorist Committee thanked Kabardino-Balkaria’s residents, the vigilance of which helped to avert a major terrorist act in downtown Nalchik.
“A homemade explosive device stuffed with striking metal pieces and the blast power of about three kilograms of TNT was found next to the monument to the late first president of Kabardino-Balkaria Valery Kokov on the Lenin Avenue in Nalchik on Friday. The homemade explosive device was planted in the flower bed and remotely controlled so that it could be detonated at any moment,” a source in the information center of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee told Itar-Tass.
The emergency headquarters of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee in the republic reported that the criminals intended to detonate the bomb on October 18 on the day of scheduled mass events on the occasion of the 70th birthday anniversary of the late first president in Kabardino-Balkaria. The leadership of the North Caucasus region, residents and guests in the republic were expected to participate in the commemoration events.
“Since the explosion was highly probable in the transportation the bomb disposal engineers decided to defuse the bomb on the spot,” the spokesman said.
“The emergency headquarters of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee in Kabardino-Balkaria thanked the residents, the vigilance of which helped to avert a masterminded terrorist act and to ward off a threat for the life and health of many civilians. The incident showed graphically again the cynical nature and the lack of principles in the criminals, who are seeking to destabilize the situation in the region through outrageous banditry acts, intimidate residents and to hamper making the law and order stronger in all the ways,” a source in the National Anti-Terrorist Committee information center underlined.
