Director of independent social research institute detained in Minsk

Manayev himself said his briefing for members of the diplomatic corps had been scheduled for Thursday

MINSK, October 6 (Itar-Tass) — Belarusian authorities have detained Oleg Manayev, the chief of an independent Institute for Social, Economic and Political Research, which is registered in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

Eyewitnesses of his detention said he was approached by policemen, who asked him to show his passport and told him after that they had an instruction to detain him.

Sources said Manayev was taken to the police department of the city's Partizansky district.
