Imprisoned opposition candidate is out of jail in Belarus

MINSK, October 1 (Itar-Tass) – Belarus’s first ex-presidential candidate, Dmitry Uss, was released from jail on Saturday, following a clemency decree by President Alexander Lukashenko, the Vesna (Spring) human rights centre reports.

The wife of Dmitry Uss said that her husband had already arrived in Minsk. Until recently, Uss had stayed in the republican prison hospital in the Belarusian capital.

Earlier, President Lukashenko had pardoned 24 people arrested on charges of organizing mass riots in Minsk on the day of presidential elections on December 19, 2010.

Criminal lawsuits were filed against 40 people, including ex-presidential candidates Dmitry Uss, Nikolai Statkevich and Andrey Sannikov. They got various prison sentences.

Ex-candidate Vladimir Neklyayev was sentenced to two years in jail with punishment suspended for two years.

The former candidate Vitaly Rymashevskiy got a nominal two-year prison sentence.
