Four suspected arsonists nabbed in Bratsk

As many as 17 other local residents are investigated in connection with their complicity in kindling fires

IRKUTSK, October 1 (Itar-Tass) — Four people, suspected of setting fire to forests, were detained in Bratsk. Criminal cases were instituted against two of them. As many as 17 other local residents are investigated in connection with their complicity in kindling fires, said on Saturday Governor of the Irkutsk Region Dmitry Mezentsev.

The governor who is also head of the local government reported this news to Deputy Minister for Emergencies Pavel Popov at a video hook-up between Moscow and Bratsk.

Mezentsev assured that the situation with forest fires in the city was stabilised over the past 24 hours, and all seats of fire were localised. The content of toxic agents is under 60 percent at most areas. Calls for ambulances dropped to 170 cases, which is equal to average daily figures, while at the peak of smoke haze, their number was nearly twice as much.

The situation in Bratsk drew attention of President Dmitry Medvedev and Minister for Emergencies Serigei Shaigu on Friday. The head of state said that local executives should be punished for inadequate activities in putting out fires.

“I imagine how Bratsk looks like and surprised that neither local, nor regional chiefs take normal actions. This is a reason for making organisational conclusions,” the head of state said at a meeting with Minister for Emergencies Sergei Shoigu.

The regional administration reported late on Friday evening that acting Bratsk Mayor Alexander Tuikov tendered a resignation.
