TSKHINVAL, September 30 (Itar-Tass) —— The security service of the South Ossetian government succeeded to rebuff an attempt at an armed capture of the republican government compound on Friday.
The South Ossetian Central Elections Commission (CEC) was to have a meeting at 4 p.m. Moscow time on Friday to consider and to take a decision on the registration of a republican presidential candidate Dzhambolat Tedeveyev, who is the chief coach of the Russian free-style wrestling national team. At the moment the CEC was to begin its meeting Tedeyev’s armed supporters attempted to break into the government compound, which houses the CEC. About 150 attackers succeeded to break into the building and opened fire in the air.
Security guards blocked the way for the armed mob and ousted the attackers from the building.
Tedeyev’s supporters, who are staging rallies in his support in downtown Tskhinval, were forced out of the government compound, but do not go out yet, staying on the square in front of the government.
Some 25 initiative-making groups and two parties have filed documents in the South Ossetian CEC so far. The CEC already registered as presidential candidates Alan Kochiyev, Vadim Tskhovrebov and Vladimir Kelekhsayev for the presidential elections due in the republic on November 13. The CEC was to decide on Dzhambolat Tedeyev’s registration on Friday, but the CEC meeting was disrupted due to an armed attack and did not resume yet.
